## Description

The SparkFun Current Sensor Breakout is a high accuracy board that utilizes the ACS723 for moderate AC and DC current sensing applications. The ACS723 sensor uses a Hall effect sensor to output a voltage relative to the current flowing through the IP+ and IP- pins on the board. The SparkFun Current Sensor Breakout measures both DC and AC currents all the way up to 5A, has full electrical isolation of measured and sensed circuits, and has a base sensitivity of 400mV/A. Although the analog output is adjustable to 80kHz, the bandwidth on the ACS723 Sensor Breakout width filter has been set to 20kHz to reduce noise when using at high gains. The full 80KHz bandwidth that the sensor is capable of can be recovered by closing the JP1 (Bandwidth Select) jumper on the back of the board. The ACS723 sensor uses a Hall effect sensor to output a voltage relative to the current flowing through the IP+ and IP- pins. The advantage of using a Hall effect sensor is that the circuit being sensed and the circuit reading the sensor are electrically isolated. The amplified breakout board (Low Current) is capable of sensing very small currents down to around 10mA and large currents up to 5A! However, since the output is analog, your usable readings will be limited by noise and the resolution of the ADC reading the output. This sensor is not recommended for current sensing lower than 10's of milliamps.

- You should keep in mind how much power your resistors can handle though! If not, they'll end up a bit toasty... With 5V and 100mA, the power would be 500mW or 1/2W. The small resistors in the kit above can only handle 250mW or 1/4W at most. But, wait! A resourceful engineer knows you can still use the 1/4W resistors, you just need to split the power dissipation.

Spark Fun delivered on time with no problems. Good price. The current sensors work very well with low noise. I am using it to measure current through a Stepper Motor winding. Works great!

### ⭐⭐ Not sensitive to low amperage (<0.1ADC)

I bought this intending to use it for a custom linear power supply I've built. I was planning to read voltage from it using an arduino analogRead() as proxy for DC current flowing through it, as it was designed.The product manual on the ACS723 indicates it has 400 mV/A output, so does this product. Using the circuit they describe here: file:///Users/deansanders/Downloads/ACS723-Datasheet%20(2).pdf I tested this module.With highly accurate volt-ohm meters I wasn't able to get a >4mV delta with ~106 mA flowing through it (i.e. 5V across a 47 ohm resistor). If the output scales linearly with amperage it should be 40mV not 4mV. This is far to low of resolution for an arduino to effectively read current... I wanted 10 mA resolution, not worse than 200 mA.I thought it might just be a badly machined part, so I returned it. Got another, tested it, got the exact same result. They are NOT sensitive for low amperage DC applications, which again is not mentioned in the datasheet. If your looking for an accurately scaling low amperage I.C. go for something else. I just ended up a using a cheapo current meter I have laying around, it works way better than this.
