This was probably because I do not nearly pay enough attention to the water quality in my spa as I do with the pool - especially during the hot summer months. Looking at the Balboa alternatives (full assembly), the cost was about 5x more expensive than just replacing the heater element. It was actually quite easy to make the replacement, see YouTube for many tutorials, and installed this replacement yesterday. This fixed the problem and seems to be working well. As advertised in Amazon, this comes with a 5-year warranty, so if anything happens within this time, I will write an update.
