You can't afford to not use these (or something like them) if your time is at all valuable. *by A***R on July 13, 2017* So much better than cap nails! When you value your time at anything above $3 per hour, the CH38A and these cap staples are a no brainer. I can staple down a 30+ foot sheet of underlayment in a little over a minute, ok maybe two. But just try to get anywhere close to that with cap nails and a hammer... it's no contest at all. And if your are working with occasional wind gusts causing the underlayment to move around, you need all the speed you can get to put it in place and hold it down before the next gust causes trouble.A neighbor gave me the CH38A, so I didn't purchase it myself, but oh man would I if needed!The CH38A is pretty much a basic manual impact stapler with a fancy mechanism hanging off the left side of it to feed caps in with every swing. The CH38A does require you to get used to the proper way to swing it. A little wrist flick at the end is important, and don't swing it to softly. With a regular impact stapler, you can easily drive the staple clear through the underlayment leaving a hole, and the underlayment unsecured. Since the CH38A delivers a cap, you have to drive it a little harder to get through the cap, and cut the cap off of the real. If you don't swing it hard enough you will pull a bunch of caps out of the real.Reloading staples is just like an impact stapler. Caps are straight forward, but take a little while to get the next roll threaded and into position for the next swing. Two sticks of staples and one roll of caps will get used up at the same time, from a single loading. The last two caps in each roll always fall out and are lost because the mechanism loosed its hold on them.Comparing this to running around the roof with a pneumatic stapler, this is a much better option. No hose to fight with and manage. The caps set well, protect the underlayment from wind, and keep the puncture point sealed. The CH38A even comes with a hook like nailers and staplers come with a rafter hook to quickly hang it on your belt, tool belt, or pants.After using the CH38A, I would not even consider a pneumatic cap stapler unless code required a bigger, heavier staple than could be driven by this kind of unit. The time savings and simplicity to not manage compressed air equipment on the roof is well worth it.For putting down asphalt shingles with a cap, I would definitely look at one of the air powered versions over a standard roofing coil nailer. Bostitch and National Nail (or their subsidiary) each have one to my knowledge.An additional note, I used synthetic underlayment from the usual big box store for my roofing project. The kind I used has the high wind staple pattern printed right on it, just play whack-a-mole with the stapler and keep the underlayment wrinkle free as you go. Dial back to only putting as many staples in as you need for how windy your areas is. I used two different grades, depending on the location of placement. The higher grade is definitely nicer to work with, and looks like it will stand the test of time better, but at 2.5x the cost it makes you wonder about whether it is necessary. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Held overnight 40mph wind gusts *by G***G on April 24, 2024* Works great ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent grip and leak proof *by B***Y on September 30, 2019* Installed a vapor barrier on a house using this product. The weather during installation was hot and sunny. During the evening the weather turned to wind and rain. This product works better then expected and the vapor barrier didn't move, rip or leak.
