Excellent Pattern Resource
I took a sashiko class & the teacher recommended this book as a resource for sashiko patterns and some projects. This is not a book to start from the beginning and work your way through. Look for the patterns described as easy, and start there. Diagrams show how to build the patterns and pictures show the final result. There is a chapter with pictures of completed projects, as well as projects scattered throughout, and an extensive bibliography for those who want to delve deeper. All the patterns list the Japanese name and English translation. They also include historical or cultural notes.

Beautiful book!
What a lovely book! Well-written, lots of information and projects. I love the way the author uses different colors in the instructions for different stitches, so you can see exactly where the lines go. By the way, the print version is SO much nicer than the kindle version. You really want to hold this beautiful book in your hands, so you can see the photos full-size.

Great beginner book
This book is a great start if you want to try Sashiko. It has good explanation for the stitches, standard tools, usable patterns for the stitching. It has several projects to try the stitches on. Many sashiko books focus on using it for visible mending. This does no, which is great for those how want to use it in a general way.

Impressive book; it's all you need for instructions & design (includes history) with Sashiko.
This is all you need for instructions and design with Sashiko, honestly. It covers some history of this tradition of sewing system. I was very impressed with the designs it offers which is many. I was able to trace and copy (both methods) for 3 designs when I tested it. I used a pencil that will transfer onto fabric after putting it on paper. Any more things would be redundant, no stencils needed, if you just trace it onto your paper, or you can copy it on to your fabric if you are confident.

In-depth study and useful info
Excellent for beginners, the book gives historical background, then moves on to traditional materials and notions and how to use them. A very important section on how to draw motifs on square grids and how to elongate the grids to distort the motifs is alone worth the book's price for it allows total independence for the artist to draw motifs on any fabric the exact size needed for a project instead of relying on stencils and pre-printed fabric, besides being the traditional and cheapest technique. The projects proposed are in good taste and a good mix of tradition and innovation. Follows a rich pattern library that shows in what order to do each motif, a splendid "Inspiration gallery" and a list of resources. An excellent reference for the experienced and the beginners too!

ATTRAYANT
