## Description

Dark toasted oak chips will allow you to imitate storing your wine in an oak barrel without the expense. Adding oak chips to your wine will increase it's complexity. We recommend mainly using these dark chips for big red wines. They will add a deep caramelized oak flavor to your wine and may also be used in conjunction with medium toast chips. To use just boil the chips in water for 10 minutes and then drain and place the chips in your plastic or glass fermenter before transferring.

Review: Good value, plenty of oak chips, very darkly toasted - I like these wood chips and the flavor they impart. I wish there was a way to grind them into oak sawdust because that would make for more wood to wine contact. After I've let these sit in the wine for 7 days, I take them out, rinse them off and use them in my smoker when smoking meat. I"m not sure if it adds any flavor to the meat, but why waste wine-soaked wood. It can't be bad, right? Good price, there are plenty in the bag, I consider this a good value and an easy way to oak wine. If I used the whole bag when making a batch of wine, that'd be fine because they're pretty cheap, but I'm more likely to use about a cup in the primary ferment and another cup in the secondary ferment.

After a fresh batch of 50% alcohol and one week in about a half a cup of these chips and iv'e got a product that tastes and smells like Jack Daniels. These chips are fantastic and worth the buy. The flavor is perfect, but depnding on the alcohol strength you may need to back sweeten. Origional review was one star until I tried them, I stand corrected and you will to unless you try it first.

**Q: Can these chips be re-used on a second or third batch after boiling?**
A: I'm not boiling mine.  I'm letting distilled alcohol (diluted to 110 proof) steep for a few months with a small pile of these chips in the bottom of the gallon jar.  I have reused the chips once I poured off the finished product, and I am on my 3rd reuse now.  So far so good!  And for the record, the amount of chips I used for one batch wasn't even a tenth of the overall product shipped to me.  I'll have oak chips for years to come!

**Q: The chips I received are much lighter than the picture. Is the picture accurate?**
A: Mine came lighter also . Wonder if we order it Xtra dark to get it where we want it to be?

**Q: When is the best time to add these chips?  During fermentation or aging?**
A: I use mine during fermentation. Same as when you buy the expensive wine expert kits that come with the oak chips they tell you to add during fermentation. However you can also use during aging just don't add to much or it taste like your eating the tree! Warning never reuse or continue using them past the fermentation or it will ruin the taste once it has been fermented, I will try using my next batch on the aging process so I will know how to answer this question next time!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Solid Setup for the Hobby Brewer

Bought this for my husband who’s recently taken up home brewing—because apparently, we needed another hobby in this house. To be fair, this setup works really well. It’s sturdy, easy to clean, and has all the basics he needs to get started. We’ve already gone through a couple of batches, and everything turned out surprisingly good (no explosions, so I’ll take it as a win). He’s obsessed, and I get to sample the results, so no complaints there. Only reason for 4 stars is that it didn’t come with the most detailed instructions, so there was a bit of YouTubing involved. Otherwise, solid product and a great gift for your aspiring backyard brewmaster.
