## Description

The furniture of each piece in the Great Wave Set displays the renowned Tomoe motif used frequenly for family crests and shrine decoration. The tsuba, fuchi, & kashira are made of blackened iron and feature the Tomoe crest (mon). The blades are hand-forged from T10 high-carbon steel and are differentially hardened using traditional claying methods. The temper line (hamon) is evident and prominent. Each piece has a deeply lacquered black saya with a one-piece brass habaki construction. Real ray skin (same) is used on the tsuka, and the tsuka-ito and sageo are made of premium woven Japanese black cotton. The handle on the tanto is an attractive ribbed buffalo horn. Specifications: - Overall length: 11 3/4" - Blade length: 6 3/4" - Handle length: 4" - Weight: 10oz - Thickness at Guard: .280"

Review: An authentic tanto made by a master craftsman could hardly be better. No buyer's remorse here at all - This is a very high quality item. Review: You get what you pay for is not always true. - So I bought this tanto because I used to be a sword collector well over a decade ago. I sold off all of my collection and got into knives because I saw their usefulness in a everyday life. I decided I wanted a Japanese tanto as mento to my once long time ago hobby. I decided on the CAS Hanwei Great Wave Tanto because I read good things about the company when I was researching a tanto. I also read that if I were to go with a Chinese produce company, then it should be CAS Hanwei. I wanted something that would be functional and it would serve as a nice display piece. So I spent $359 on this Tanto and let me say, fit and finish was not worth the price. I probably could have been better off with a modern knife and received better fit and finish. The pictures I posted should be able to explain most of the "issues" I found. I have a critical eye for fit and finish from years of buying knives. Most of the issues might be deemed as "nitpicks" and the average buyer/collector may not care. 1)The bohi, fuller(blood grove) is not within the same dimisions on either side. One side sits slight higher then the other near the back or the spine of the knife. One side of the fuller, tapers towards the tip, while the other side is pretty uniform during the entire length of the fuller. 2)The Habaki or blade collar; at the base of it where it meets the brass spacers, the seppa, there's slight gap near the edge side of the knife. The Habaki is also scuffed. I assume normal wear for fit check with the sheath. 3) When the knife is sheathed, it does rattle. Mostly near the tip section. 4)The hamon line near the tip has a scuff. Maybe caused by the sheath rattle. This kind of distracts from the rest of the look of hammon line. If the hammon line is scuffed easily then it is not really hammon, something was done to "enhance" or bring out the hammon. 5)On the Kashira, the pommel, there are these little gold fittings(two) that fit into Kashira. Both sit kind of crooked. I wish they were more in line with the handle of the knife. It just looks sloppy 6)Near the tip of the knife; from the point to about half an inch down, the edge is flat or dull. 7) The sharpness could be better. I mean it's about as sharp as an axe. It had a difficult time shaving arm hair or catching on the back of my thumb nail. 8) On the buffalo handle, close to the Fuchi, you can see a section where a piece of the handle had chipped off and was glued back on. Maybe during the manufacturing process? This just looks sloppy. It gives the impression that this knife is a factory second or it was owned previously. Overall. I wasn't impressed with the fit and finish for the price I paid. After some thought; I decided on returning the knife back to desertcart for a full refund. There are other Japanese tanto's out there with a better fit and finish that can be $100 cheaper then the CAS Hanwei Great Wave Tanto. I suggest Swords of Northshire. Edited review: I had to fix a few grammatical errors and added some more information.
