can I add a 12 volt alternator or charger to the output to charge the 24 volt supply battery?

This converts 24v to 12v not the other way around. Now as far as your question. If you have 12v battery's wired in Series to make it a 24v battery then yes you can use a 12v alternator to charge your battery's. Personally I wouldn't buy this unit again as It burnt up upon 1st use.

Do you have to install a switch between the converter and the battery to stop battery drain or will the batteries be ok hooked straight in line?

This output is 12V and the voltage can't be adjusted.

Zero supporting documentation

No instructions, specifications, application limits, warnings or wiring diagrams. Just the converter and a loose jumper clip thrown in the box. Typical product from China.

Not working

I usually plug any new electronic device into the electricity hours before I connected to another device So I connect the device to 24v Battery and check the voltage output is 13.3v and keep few hours and check the device is heating normal but no output power
