EMG 81 sounds good but not worth time and money spent.
Some plug and play and YES some soldering, so i installed emg 81 pickup after trail and error, diagram was ok but didn't show how to install 1 active emg with 1 passive pickup. emg easily scratches, also screws and springs were not included as diagram states not sure what happened to mine. the sound is brighter than the passive pickup that came with the guitar but not worth $120 and 2 hours labor. Also 9 volt battery (powers up emg) and emg pickup wires didn't fit well where they needed to go so i recommend a drill.

If You've Considered It, You'll Like It.
This pickup looks great, first of all. It's smooth chrome finish went great with my Blacktop Baritone Telecaster. The tone is what'd you'd expect from an EMG pickup, high quality active sound and a great canvas from which to carve your sound. Many people complain about its 'sterile' sound but in my case that's just what I wanted: a foundation on which to paint my signature sound. The pickup is powerful and responsive and cuts through the mix with ease. Its a great extreme metal pickup.
