Once I put 4 AAA batteries(not included) into the light, it won't fire up immediately because it is designed to work only in dark areas AND there is motion. The motion sensor works very well and it turns the light on when I enter its detecting zone, it is pretty cool and very fun to use. The light emits bright cool white light and it is more than adequate to shine up a closet, cabinet, small bathroom without blinding me. I can think of a lot of areas in my house that I can use this light and I might need to get a few more. It's too sensitive to ambient light. Since the light only activates when the unit senses that it is dark in the room, the light did not go on when I mounted it under the cabinet (even though it was a pretty dark corner). Apparently our overhead kitchen light produced too much light. While it's not good for under-cabinet task lighting, I found it to be very useful for stairway lighting. I'd previously purchased OXY LED battery-operated lights for the stairs, and they had the opposite problem. They would activate even during the daytime. I replaced the OXY light with this one and am very pleased. It only activates when it's very dark and it gives off a good amount of light.UPDATE Jan 2016: I changed my review from 5 stars to 3 stars because after only 1 month, the light needs new batteries. I thought it would last longer because it doesn't activate during the daytime. I'll go back to the OXY LED light for my stairway.
