The hotplate worked fine for about 3 weeks (i.e., about 10-15 hours of actual use). It then stopped heating (but the "heat" light was still illuminated). We returned it to Amazon for a replacement, and exactly the same happened with that. We assume that there must be some relatively common defect in these Thermo Scientific hotplates (or we were just very unlucky).
