You pull the lever like a syringe and when you pull it, the four metal claws extend from the hole at the bottom of the rod. When you let go of the lever, the claws grip the item with a decent amount of force to not drop it. The magnet at the end of the rod is also useful if you need to pick up something metallic, but it might struggle with anything too heavy, as the magnet isn't that strong. You can bend the rod into the appropriate shape for the situation and it will hold the shape well. However, if you apply any force to it, the rod will bend further. I had something stuck behind a drawer in a sealed unit, but managed to retrieve it in about 5 mins. The last 3 inches of the pole (where the claw is) isnt actually flexible at all, but it’s still small enough to fit in tight spaces, and it still did the job. There are no instructions on how to put the batteries in - but you unscrew the handle end, and you pop in 3 x LR44 for the light to work. I found once I’d unscrewed it, I had to take a little black plastic tube out first otherwise they don’t fit. You put them in with the flat + surface facing upwards. But the claw mechanism will still work without batteries anyway.
