NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER โข โDriving, wild and hilariousโ (The Washington Post), here is the incredible โmemoirโ of the actor, gambler, raconteur, and Saturday Night Live veteran.Donโt miss Normโs new Netflix special, Hitlerโs Dog, Gossip & Treachery! When Norm Macdonald, one of the greatest stand-up comics of all time, was approached to write a celebrity memoir, he flatly refused, calling the genre โone step below instruction manuals.โ Norm then promptly took a two-year hiatus from stand-up comedy to live on a farm in northern Canada. When he emerged he had under his arm a manuscript, a genre-smashing book about comedy, tragedy, love, loss, war, and redemption. When asked if this was the celebrity memoir, Norm replied, โCall it anything you damn like.โPraise for Based on a True StoryโDostoyevsky by way of 30 Rockefeller Center . . . the best new book Iโve read this year or last.โโThe Wall Street Journal โThis book is absurd fiction. . . . Scathing and funny.โโThe New York Times โHilarious and filled with turns of phrase and hidden beauty like only a collection of Norm Macdonald stories could be.โโEsquire โRaucous . . . a hilarious, innovative work.โโA.V. Club โPart personal history and part meta riff on celebrity memoirs, the book, it quickly becomes clear, is also just partly true (and all hilarious).โโVulture โVery, very, very funny! Thanks, Norm, for letting me be part of this Booker Prizeโforโliteratureโquality effort.โโDavid Letterman โNorm is brilliant and thoughtful and there is sensitivity and creative insight in his observations and stories. A lot of comics over the years have been compared to Mark Twain, but I think Norm is the only one who actually matches the guy in terms of his voice and ability. I seriously f**king love Norm Macdonald. Please buy his book. He probably needs the cash. Heโs really bad with money.โโLouis C.K., from the foreword โNorm is one of my all-time favorites, and this book was such a great read I forgot how lonely I was for a while.โโAmy Schumer โI always thought Normieโs stand-up was the funniest thing there was. But this book gives it a run for its money.โโAdam Sandler โNorm is one of the greatest stand-up comics whoโs ever workedโa totally original voice. His sense of the ridiculous and his use of juxtaposition in his writing make him a comicโs comic. We all love Norm.โโRoseanne Barr โNorm Macdonald makes me laugh my ass off. Who is funnier than Norm Macdonald? Nobody.โโJudd Apatow โNorm Macdonald is more than a triple threatโheโs a septuple threat. He is smart, funny, wry, rakish, polite, rakish . . . no, wait. He is polite, insightful, and . . . aaaaah . . . warm. No. Heโs exciting. Yeah. Exciting! You never know what heโll do. Okay, then make that unpredictable. Add that up. Heโs amazing.โโAlec Baldwin โNorm is a double threat. His material and timing are both top-notch, which is unheard of. He is one of my favorites, both on- and off-stage.โโDave Attell โLetterman said it best: There is no one funnier than Norm Macdonald.โโRob Schneider Review: A beautiful and incredibly funny book! - Rarely have I read a funnier or better book. The genius of Norm Macdonald continues to stand out. Review: Incredibly funny, captures the true essence of Norm. The ending is also great. - Awesome book. Must buy if you have enjoyed his stand up and sense of humor.

Funny book, bad paper quality
I have listened to the audiobook and read the ebook from the funny fella and just want the book to be there, at arms reach, till the end of time. And if I tie my end of time to this quality of paper, I maybe have a year to live. I have seen better paper quality in the books sold outside the railway station...at the tenth of the price.

His TV vs his book? The TV, every time...
The book is nowhere close to the audacity that Norm MacDonald is in real life. Quite disappointing from that perspective. You only have to look at his standup and especially his interviews with Letterman, Conan, Jon Stewart (the one blasting the then-recently demised crocodile hunter) to get a full account of the man's genius. The book in no way stands up to that body of work.

Funny one-time read.
A funny story, well told in Norm's inimitable style. Not great enough that I will ever re-read it, though. Probably.
