A microphone is just a device to collect sound waves. To amplify it you need something maybe as simple as a bullhorn or plug it into your home stereo or into an amplifier. When the stand is fully extended the microphone (Shure 58) is pointing at my forehead. So I'm pretty sure with a tube style recording condenser mic, you'd be fine.
