I am a Biology and Chemistry Major and still found the book very helpful. It will stay in my Company Vehicle as a quick reference ..I gained employment with Halliburton approximately six months after graduating Mud School at DFE TECH and have served as a private tutor to students attending DFE TECH ...I also purchased the "Drilling Fluids Processing Handbook" and "Composition and Properties of Drilling and Completion Fluids" These books can be helpful and I would certainly purchase them again if money were not an issue, but I found myself "reading between the lines" regarding formulas that were completely irrelevant for doing your job as a competent Mud Engineer. The total I spent on these two books was $267.64 vs $59 for "So you want to be a Mud Engineer" If you are a recent Mud School Graduate or considering a career as a Mud Engineer, this book is worth its weight in gold and I highly recommend it! Review: The best book about mud engineering principles I have read. - I am a ten year mud engineer, and am now a mud school instructor. I went through the authors school years ago. I can say that this book imparts not only useful information about mud, and mud engineering, but it also communicates a tried and true method and theory about HOW to be a mud engineer. The author is very skilled at communicating the formulas and chemistry necessary for mud engineers. He also includes several useful chapters about the realities of the job, and the skills and attitude necessary to be effective in the field. I encourage each student in my school to purchase the book, and frequently quote from it in my school. I could not recommend this book more highly, as it is the most concise and useful text for those who want to be or are beginning mud engineers. Drilling mud is one of the most costly parameters in oil and gas drilling, and usually entails a conglomeration of knowledge including: physics, chemistry, math, manufacturing, etc. This book manages to sum up many of the basic concepts needed to understand the function and purpose of drilling fluid and conveys how mud is used in the field.
