They get soggy and nasty. And the price adds up. Someone suggested I try these, and wow! What a difference! A few pebbles at the bottom of the bowl absorb moisture and help the tobacco burn evenly and smoothly. Plus, they can be reused. The price of this little bag may seem steep at first, but when you consider how much you'll save on filters in the long run it's well worth the investment. I now use ten stones at the bottom of every smoke. Buying them in 100-gram bags is economical -- I toss the stones after smoking rather than dry and re-use them.I smoke all kinds of tobacco blends (aromatics, Burley codgers, Virginias, English) in all types of cuts (plug, flake, square cut, ribbon, shag) in all sorts of pipes (briar, meerschaum, cob).Using these stones, I can pack the tobacco tighter for longer, more enjoyable smokes. I use 8 or 10 stones in a pipe and have seen drastic results. The gurgle I occasionally got, gone! The dottle that was usually present, gone, nothing but ashes left! I reuse the stones, just rub them clean and set aside for the next pipe. I've been using the same 10 for a few days now, I haven't used them for different types of blends for fear of flavor ghosts. I have 10 set for my English and 10 set for my aromatic blend. This little bag will last a very long time, however I'm ordering another one, just incase I misplace the one I have.
