I have two Fluval filters, 105, 305 on a 40 gallon breeder tank (used for a turtle and guppies only).** A: Unless it completely breaks down and crumbles, never. Do not wash in the sink or with tap water as it will kill the bacteria which is the entire point of these. If clogged with physical detritus just shake them loosely in aquarium water in your aquarium safe bucket you use for water changes or cleaning and reuse. They only say to replace so they can make $$$. **Q: Out of one box which is about 18 ounces, how many gallons of water would this be good for? Simply because I have a 55gal aqaurium** A: Biological media doesn't go by gallons, I understand it seems like it should, but if your tank is cycled or in the process of cycling this just makes a safe place for that bacteria to live, you'd be fine with one box due to the super high surface area of these rings, but you can always add more if you have space for them, your tank being fully cycled is what really matters. **Q: How good is the Surface Area for these? More rough=more SA.** A: They have worked well for my aquarium - still in use - they have a textured surface to hold - I like the product **Q: Would this filter media work if I put it in a mesh pouch and hang it in the tank? I have a light source so not sure if this would make algae grow** A: Yes but not as efficiently. Bacteria can easily colonize these rings in a filter because so much waste passes through them.
