I watched and waited for it to come out...with some trepidation, as movies are often not as good as the books that inspired them. Fans of the book generally hated the movie. I resisted watching the movie until only recently, when it was on Netflix and I figured it been so long since I read the book, I could try it. Still not a fan of the movie....but it inspired me to order another copy of the book to re-read it. But this review is supposed to be about the book, right? Let me tell you more about the book. If you are a zombie fan, like me, surely you watched the Walking Dead. I had friends who didn't understand why I enjoyed the show, and I would explain to them that it wasn't really about the zombies per se, it was about how people responded to a crisis. For better, and usually, worse. Well, World War Z is like that. It is set several years AFTER a world-wide zombie crisis has occurred, and the world is in recovery. It is a series of interviews with all kinds of characters, who share their experiences, insight, and opinions-about why it happened, what was done right, wrong, etc. It tells a story of how different countries might have saved many people, or sacrificed them, based on their policies. How being rich, or poor, would affect your chances. How people would try to capitalize off the crisis, either legitimately, or in scams. It's just really well done. The movie is nothing like the book, except the title! Apparently Max Brooks was ok with the movie, but money talks, of course. I recently came across some rumors that they may make a sequel more in line with the book...we shall see. Review: Best zombie book - One of the best stories I've ever read. I love it's journey of covering survivors stories of the apocalypse. From the possible origin tp the bleak end of humanity to its final stand and overcoming the never-ending horde. Each chapter having a different perspective across the world and era of the apocalypse kept me engaged through the whole book. I highly recommend for a horror/ dramatic story. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fabulous Zombie story ruined by Hollywood. Read the book!! *by D***2 on July 12, 2018* I LOVE this book. I am buying this one to share with a friend who is a fan of Zombie stories. So much superior to the movie (which was heavily altered to be a vehicle for Brad Pitt) in the richness of the story and the characters. I insisted she read this as I feel it is a GREAT book. One that deserved MUCH better treatment by Hollywood. Mr. Brooks has "conjured" images with words that have stayed with me and some that still cause bad dreams to this day. His story telling is on par with that of Stephen King in my opinion. The movie "Contagion" is closer to how this zombie apocalypse plays out than the "WWZ" movie. The "narrator" is going around the world, now that the plague is under control and somewhat over, and interviewing people who were "there". Their stories, from the first incident of trouble, all the way to the aftermath, are "documented" in chilling and sometimes shocking detail. As I said, there are images that have stayed with me to this day. This would have made a fantastic limited mini-series with each episode a chapter/story or two of the survivors. Great book!! If you liked the movie, you should LOVE the book.
