### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The best assisted belay device available

*by T***L on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 16, 2022*

After years of use and hundreds of pitches of climbing, I still believe that the Alpine Up is the best all-around assisted belay device out there.Feeding slack to the leader is very smooth. Belaying the second in "guide mode" is easier than any other device other than a Kong GiGi/plaquette.The assisted catch function works very well.Rappelling in the assisted function is great and allows you to go hands free to deal with rope tangles or other issues. This device excels at pretty much everything you need for climbing with one or two ropes. It's a bit more bulky and heavy than an ATC/Reverso, but has more functionality.Only downside is that it only works well with a specific carabiner shape. I suggest buying a couple of spare carabiners to use with it in the event that you drop one.

    Do-it-all belay device

The Climbing Technology AlpineUp is a versatile, do-it-all belay device. You can belay and rappel in both manual and assisted braking modes. You can belay off an anchor from the top. The only device that is as functional as this device is the Edelrid Giga Jul. The one significant negative of the AlpineUp is that it can be a little tricky to disengage the carabiner after the climber has fallen.

    Good for what it is.

If your in the market for an assisted braking device for use with double / twin ropes this is a quality product.I am new to climbing so am entering the sport seemingly as the assisted braking belay device is becoming mainstream, so I don't actually have any experiance with non assisted braking devices.I own the Mega Jul, an this device. I have use a Mammut Smart for lead belaying double ropes ice climbing. What I have found is none of these assisted braking devices are great for smoothly lowering a climber or rappelling. This Alpine Up is especially hard to rap on in assisted braking mode, (you have to feed it rope) which is mentioned in the user manual, and there is a method to suppousedly make it easier that I have not tried. It does have a non assisted braking mode (called dynamic mode) that makes rappelling on it easier. I just back it up with an auto block. I have not tried rappelling on a Mammut Smart but am told by the owner of one that they are not a lot of fun to rappel on. The Mega Jul in assisted breaking mode is really touchy, either wants to lock up or run wide open.So I give four stars because it is big and clunky, and not really usable as an assisted braking rappel device. But it is what it is, an assisted braking belay device. Something all the manufacturers seem to be working to improve / perfect and none are there yet.
