Review: Does not power board! / No high-voltage programming / NOT STK500 compatible - Unlike every other AVR programmer I've used before, this programmer DOES NOT POWER THE BOARD. The VCC pin provides no power. So if you want to use this to program anything you have to power the board externally, which is inconvenient at best.... Unlike the STK500, this board also DOES NOT DO HIGH VOLTAGE PROGRAMMING. In other words, if you are trying to recover a chip with badly set fuse or lock bits, this programmer can not do that. It does not provide the necessary 12V on the RESET pin. This board is a CH340 USBSerial converter, with an Atmega8535 chip and s shift register (somehow?). There is no power supply or any other supporting circuitry on this board. So basically this is pretty much the worst AVR programmer you can buy. It does nothing it claims in the description and is far worse than any of the TinyISP or other type devices. "Based on ATMEL Official STK500"???!??!? LOL .... Stay away!
Review: Works great. - Worked great on programming custom atmega. Able to add the tool on Atmel Studio 7.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What voltages are supported? 5V? 3V3?**
A: My boards are all 5v, have not tried 3.3v. Works on 5v with studio 7. I also bought the AVR programmer from Microchip, since my attiny1617 boards need the "one wire" programming method that this programmer doesn't support. Good luck!

**Q: What is the avrdude setup? i have been able to get it to work intermittently and very slowly with:
avrdude -c avrisp2 -p com2 -p t13 -v -emyfile.hex**
A: Im not sure about the 'speed' you expect but you have to make absolutely sure you use the same physical USB port once the drive is installed. Go look up Zadig USB driver installer. Also, I was not able to get that programmer to work properly until I used the 10 pin connector via an adapter into a 6 pin socket on my prototype board.

https://www.amazon.com/Comimark-Convert-Standard-Adapter-AVRISP/dp/B07WZF6Z27/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3NTU71Z2RSE9J&dchild=1&keywords=10+pin+to+6+pin+adapter&qid=1606212565&sprefix=10+to+6+pin+adapter%2Caps%2C193&sr=8-3

the above made it possible to use Atmel Studio with the programmer (it sounds like you have a cable problem, as if the drivers were not properly installed, it would not work at all)

Worked great on programming custom atmega. Able to add the tool on Atmel Studio 7.

### ⭐ Could not get this to work
*by U***Y on October 20, 2022*

My STK500 died and I didn't feel like spending $150 for a new one, so I decided to try this thing. I'm using Windows XP, SP3. My Studio 4.19 recognized the device, no problem. But, when I went to the Fuses or Lock Bits tab, it would not talk to the unit. The green LED flashed red then green. I lowered the ISP frequency to 4.00kHz and was able to read and program both the Fuses and Lock Bits (good!). However, when I went to program the Flash, it gave me an error stating that the minimum ISP frequency must be 5kHz or higher (picture 1). Studio only has 5 frequencies from which to choose (picture 2). 57.6kHz was the next highest from 4.00kHz. When I selected that, the device tried to program, but failed verification. And again, with 57.6kHz, I could not read the Fuses or Lock Bits. I tried this on 2 different XP machines (Studio 4.19 and 4.15) and several target boards. I've sent 2 emails to Waveshare and did not get a response. So, I sent it back and may try another device.
