    Surprising Nutrition Information

*by B***T on Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2015*

Golly, I posted a question asking about Nutrition Information intending to answer it, but Amazon won't let you answer your own question. I figured posing it as a question would be more helpful for another reader, than plowing through reviews. My 'can' just arrived, today. But I gotta write a review to answer the question, so here goes:Serving size is 2 tbsp (20 g), and has 70% Vit A, 40% Vit C, Calcium 4% and Iron 6%, 3 g Protein and fiber (each), 15 g carbs, almost no sodium (25 mg), and 60 calories, about 74 servings in a can. So one star is 'debited' from this review, because the Nutrition Info is NOT LISTED in the product description! We can't buy products unless we have enough info, okay? This is great stuff, so PLEASE LIST THE NUTRITION INFORMATION?Now, elsewhere I read that tomatoes when dried, are 1/28 of their fresh weight. So 14 pounds of fresh tomatoes dry up to 8 oz. Since your average tomato has about the same nutrition as cited above (what a shock, because the Vit C content is high despite it being dried), this is a very economical can: runs about 2.1 cents per ounce aka 35 cents a pound (32/1456 ounces, which is 28 x 16 x 3.25). And yes, it's the same size as your erstwhile three-pounder of coffee (you remember, when ground coffee was sold in metal cans and actually weighed 3 pounds). Now, nothing beats fresh tomatoes, especially Roma, and these look like American Beauty tomatoes (which I can never grow). The cheapest I've ever seen the latter tomato in Walmart, was maybe fifty cents per pound, usually much more than double that. Romas usually run 80 cents per pound (and nothing but nothing beats Romas, fresh). So this is a great alternative, especially if you use cooked tomatoes a lot. Canned tomatoes are awful, generally, except for Red Gold and Walmart fire roasted Salsa tomatoes. Why? Something in the metal can takes away the tomato taste. This powder, then, is both a handy and a fresher-tasting alternate.A to-die-for tomato-beef bouillon is that 'serving' with McCormick Beef Base (1tsp) in hot or boiling water (about12 oz). Instructions say that 'serving' plus 1/4 cup water makes that much paste; if instead 1/3 cup, makes that much sauce. I didn't try those options.Last question is, how long will it keep unrefrigerated after opening, if the temperature is say 70 degrees or less (room temperature). Tomatoes love warmth. My Harmony House tomato powder started to turn yellow though unrefrigerated after two-three months. So I put it in the veggie bin of the fridge, and the yellowing stopped. Ergo, perhaps keep an eye on the contents' color; if it starts to change, pop it in the fridge.

So Glad I Found This Product!

*by L***4 on Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2013*

I'm as happy as can be to have found this product. I have been ill for some time and as a result I've been home bound much of the time. Grocery shopping isn't easy as a result and so I've been getting creative with ways to make food last longer and be more convenient to my needs in general. I recently read an article that dehydrated and freeze-dried food was the next best thing to fresh, even over frozen. This started my interest in dried foods and tomato powder was my first item to try out. This arrived in a larger than expected can. I read the weight when I ordered it, but still didn't realize the can was so large. This helped justify the price, although when you consider that this is nothing but tomatoes, NO other ingredients (other than an anti-caking agent), the price seems even better. No longer am I paying for high fructose corn syrup, sugar, salt and a bunch of other junk I don't need. I was a little unsure if just adding water would really create anything appealing or resembling sauce. It was like watching a magic trick, a little water made a rich tomato paste, and more water created a very real tomato sauce! I decided to make a very simple dish, macaroni and tomato sauce to test it out. I added a few light spices, oregano, basil, garlic and sure enough, it was delicious. Tasted and smelled so fresh, unlike my jar store-bought sauces and a beautiful vivid color. The thing that excites me the most about this product is the ability to only use what I need. I live alone and I hate to open a whole jar of sauce just to make a individual sized pizza or a small portion of pasta. Then I'm forced to use up the rest of the jar before it goes bad. No longer! Now I can just create a small amount of sauce for whatever light dish I want to make and no more leftovers! Additionally, this product will save a bunch of cans or jars from getting tossed into the trash every time I use sauce, so that's less waste and a lighter trash bag! I find it amazing that this product can be so convenient AND healthier than the jars of sauce I've been buying.I'll be looking forward to trying this in other ways with various seasonings and by making it in different consistencies. I'm very satisfied with this product and am already eyeballing other dried products from Honeyville.

    Chef Approved

Let me start by saying I'm a professional in the culinary industry and a backpacking guide (Arizona).I have purchased a few Honeyville Farms products. This is one of the better products I've purchased. I bought this product in order to create lightweight backpacking meals for myself and our guests. My intention is to use this product in various applications (as a chef would use tomato). When I received the product I took 1/3c of the tomato powder and <1/3c of room temperature water. It mixed into a thick paste-like consistency. It's flavor was bright and tomato-ey. I didn't find it to be very salty as a few other reviewers have indicated. The next test was to mix enough water to make it a sauce; I also added garlic powder, onion powder, Italian herbs, red chili flakes and salt. I let it sit on the counter for 10 minutes. When I returned it tasted like a typical canned marinara sauce.I am very impressed with this product.
