The rest of my yard is rocked. Need I worry about this spreading into my rock?** A: I don’t think you have to worry about that. the clover doesn’t spread really readily **Q: How do I plant this? Does it need to just go on the ground or do I need to put a layer of top soil down?** A: The best way to plant is to use a hand crank spreader and broadcast it sparingly right on the ground. You can rake the ground lightly but its not really nessesary as the seeds are so tiny they will fall in any imperfection in the ground or fall down below grass. I just spread it sparingly right on the top of dirt or grass, you can use a roller or step it down although its not nessesary as it will grow. All clover seed needs to grow is a light sprinkling of water in the morning and again in the evening. I spread it and forget it and before you know it, you will have clover showing in a few days. Keep it simple and you cant go wrong! 3 lbs. of seed will eventually cover an acre over time. Let the flower die on the plant as it will re-seed itself as long as its not mowed to short.You will have a soft cool carpet to walk on compared to grass.I hope this helps and the price for 3lbs is very inexpensive as most all garden shops charge $12.00 per pound. Weather isn't as important to this as water. I'm in the Mid-Atlantic and have planted this in both the winter (scattered on top of the snow to come up in spring) and in the heat of summer. What IS important seems to be how much water it gets after planting. If I scattered it and we had a dry spell, the clover didn't germinate. I've taken to waiting until I knew it was going to be rainy for a few days. Scatter it heavily, let the rain soak it in and the first sunny day, you have clover. Here in the NE, we have had a lot of rain the last few summers and I believe that was the key to this clover germinating and growing so well.I did over-plant some in the winter, but for the most part, I put it on bare spots in the summer, right after a heavy rain. And since it would rain every few days, I never worried about watering. Every single place I spread this clover grew, not one failure.We have another rainy spring, so I'm ordering more now. Never used a spreader, just scooped some out of the bag in a little Dixie cup and scattered it around. Have a sort of wild thing going in the back yard and hope to have a full clover lawn back there. In the front, its more conventional, with a grass/clover mix.The bees have been having a field day on the clover in the front, so I want to add a bit more.
