There is a mark on the sliding knife that shows you when to stop as it comes to the measurement line on the mat. You have to be careful but it is not hard to make good cuts. **Q: Is the limitation of cutting only 4 ply mat board a function of the depth of the blade on the supplied bevel cutter?** A: I don't think so because you can cut foam mounting board (about 1/4 inch thick}. You can probably cut 4 ply, but it may take more than one pass. I think that it is mostly a matter of leverage. **Q: Can the cutter be configured to pull instead of push?** A: Well once you place the cutter on the track;the engage the blade by pushing the button down on the blade you can push or pull.It's a simple straight line if on the track correctly; at the start of your cut push the blade down securely so that you feel you have penetrated the mat cleanly. Then start at the bottom or at the top of your line. In my experience it creates more resistance with the pull than with the push. Keeping a sharp blade is critical. The thickness and quality of the mat have a great deal to do with the resistance you will encounter. This was the right call. It's easy and intuitive to use, and you can absolutely get a perfect cut on your first try. If you're paying attention, it's going to come out great. The only negative about it is that it takes proprietary blades for some reason. It seems like it would have been trivial to design it to use standard double edge razor blades, which are generally sharper than the blades in this kit. It's not even that the blades for this are very expensive. They're actually on-par with the cost of any decent razor blade. But because they're proprietary you have to keep track of special blades for it, and you can't just buy a 1000 pack at the hardware or drug store like you could have if it took standard blades.
