Le Secret de la Boîte: A Gripping Parisian Thriller for Intermediate Learners (B1-B2 Level): A Bilingual, French-English Story to Rapidly Improve Your Reading Skills. (French Edition) eBook : IRONSCRUSHER, VICTOR: desertcart.co.uk: Kindle Store Review: Easy reading and an engaging story. - I am an elderly man who has failed to learn French for over 70 years 🤣 This book is great fun and rolls along nicely. I do like parallel texts and the way this one is laid out stops me cheating. I still haven’t worked out why the title is misspelled - boîte should have a circumflex to show that the s is now missing. I will need to find someone to explain an í. I will look forward to finding other titles by this author and maybe an email address to ask for the answer. Review: The accent is a clue… - I haven't read the book, but I can answer the point a previous reviewer made about the accent in the title ('Boíte'). Quite simply, it's a mistake, and it should be 'Boîte', as the reviewer suspected. It does worry me that such an obvious error could make it through to the 'front cover' of this book; I hope that the rest of it is better edited and proofread. I will give it 5 stars because anything else would be unfair (as I say, I haven't read it!), but I remain a little concerned. EDIT: I still haven’t read the whole book, but I have read the online sample and checked the ‘author’s’ other works. I’m afraid this looks for all the world like AI slop; as if someone has simply asked a LLM to generate a story and a literal translation into English. The first time he had to write more than one word in French without AI assistance (for the title) he got it wrong. The same author has parallel text works in English and German, English and Spanish; and could probably pop one out in English and Mongolian if there was a market for it. If that’s really what you want, you could just do it yourself, rather than encouraging the spread of AI-generated rubbish. There are literally millions of great French novels out there; if you read them online, then a translation of any unfamiliar words is just a click away. This stuff should be removed, or at least clearly labelled as AI generated. One star for sheer bravado.
