Is this similar to an air purifier?

No it is not! This adds moisture to the air. An air purifier, by means of various filters, cleans the air of tiny particles (usually as small as 0.3 microns). This device has no filters.

Does it emit a blue light when it is turned on?

No. The only light comes from the on/off button. When it’s turned on the lights is green, when the humidifier runs out of water it shuts itself off and the lights turns red.

Can this be plugged in e.g. with usb?

No,it has it's own charger. It needs to be plugged into an electric socket.
