The tips are thermostatically controlled. Without alteration, when running a long bead of soldier you will hear a clicking sound as the thermostat cuts off power to the tip to prevent the tip from becoming red hot and melting. The thermostat is designed to shut the power to the tip off long before there is a danger of the tip melting. This actually slows down the users' ability to run long beads of soldier quickly. What we have done for years is open the cartridges up and bypass the thermostat to create what in our shop we call "hot guns". This places the only control over the tip temperature in the hands of the user. When modified this way holding the trigger down can literally cause the tip to turn red hot, melt, and fall off. However, the user can visually see when the tip is approaching that point and use soldier, flux, and/or other methods (wet sponge) as a heat sink to promptly lower the temperature of the tip. With a little experience it is easy to run long beads of soldier with the gun running wide open and releasing the trigger about an inch before the end of the bead. For us this greatly speeds up production and only occasionally leads to burning up a tip. Tips, whether modified or not, tend to last well over 100 hours of 10-12 hour per day use before burning out in our shop. That should give you an idea of just how rugged these tips are and show that cool down periods are not required. **Q: Will this work well with 12 or 14 gauge wire? Or would I need a higher wattage gun?** A: In our shop we usually open up the cartridges and bypass the thermostat which allows the gun to run wide open with the user's finger on the trigger the only control. This allows us to soldier large pieces and large gauge wire (up to 1/4 inch) without difficulty. The soldier and wire serves as a heat sink and you can visually see when the tip is approaching red hot and in danger of being damaged. We occasionally burn out a tip but, the increase in production when running long beads of soldier and working on big pieces is worth it. We routinely get close to 200 hours of continuous use out of a tip before replacing same. We use these guns for all gauges of wire and copper tubing. **Q: Is this like a hot glue gun but for solder?** A: NO it is like any other soldering gun or iron. The small tip gets hot only. It is perfect for electronic projects but not good for soldering large pieces. You have to manually add the solder usually. .020 to .040" dia. solder **Q: Does it come with a power head** A: Yes, it comes as a complete unit ready for use. Fast mid size pistol grip iron. *by M***R on November 20, 2019* This is not a popular model and not easy to find. I have used this model in my electronic repair business for overy 30 years. It produces more and quicker heat for mid size repairs from smaller to large wires. Even battery size wires to lugs. The tip stays tinned and can be cleaned with the swipe of a wet cloth. Wont do small component replacement like a pencil iron, but it not designed for that. Well worth the money. As the saying goes. The only good connection is a soldered connect.Hope that helps. It is in the trash now. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 40+ year use and counting (like some other reviewers) - not perfect but better than any other *by C***S on June 22, 2021* After a long look years ago I just discovered that this soldering gun is available again! I haven't yet ordered a new one from Amazon but couldn't pass up giving a review of this previously impossible to locate item.I have worked in electronics most of my life but now being retired I use this iron for soldering power wires on lipo batteries and other model airplane heavy wire connections and for model railroad track soldering on the type of tracks that can accept solder with flux. This gun also is very convenient in soldering smaller gauge wires especially when away from a soldering iron station.First a description - the handle is a type of plastic shell with a trigger mechanism - that is all. The working heating part of the soldering gun is in powerheads that plug into the shell. There "were" two types of powerheads. One of these is a point type tip and the other has a thicker chisel type tip. I believe but am not certain that the one to be purchased here is the point type tip - look in the description. Both the chisel and pointed heads are rated at 150 watts. The pointier type head is the one I use almost exclusively. The size of the chisel head makes it more difficult to use for pinpoint soldering and since the chisel remains a 150W head it doesn't extend any more heat then the pointed head. The chisel head does present more surface area so it will transfer the heat quicker to larger areas. (As far as I know the chisel head, although worth mentioning, but might not even be still available)Although I do have the other standard type gun for situations where only 250W can do the job - the Weller powerhead gun has multiple advantages since it is lighter, heats up quickly, gets into much tighter spaces, and has enough power to do most jobs. I can solder my model airplane #12 and #10 gauge stranded battery wire with it effectively. I've also made good solder joints down to #8 when the connection won't bleed off too much heat. In this case I also use a special flux. On the other side I often solder up to #18 and #20 gauge wires. Above that I'll typically use a good iron.So what is the downside to this gun - the only reason I give it a four rather than a five rating? the downside is that the thermostat that controls the heat can be finicky at times. After the iron starts to heat up everything is OK. The issue is that at times and for some unknown reason the gun won't even start to heat up. In this case I do the obvious - clicking the trigger several times or just waiting a little longer and finally - eventually - the heating starts. It is almost like the thermostat needs a kind of kick start sometimes. Initially when this first happened years ago I assumed that the particular powerhead went bad. However I had purchased other powerheads (the last one about 5 or 6 years ago) and even when newer this problem sometimes arises and then goes away.
