The sponge sits over a grid of plastic. It's very effective. There are two types one has a fine filter sponge one is coarse. Depending on your needs make sure you chose the right one. **Q: Will this work on a Fluval 306?** A: I hooked this to my Fluval 306 today. It does work, but I was a bit disappointed that there's not a dedicated connector for that size needed. The connection is similar to what's pictured on Amazon: Starting with the black sponge filter, connect a clear plastic elbow, then (optionally) connect another clear plastic elbow, then connect the clear tube piece that fits the 306 intake tube. The final piece that connects to the 306 intake is actually too large at first, but gets narrower and fits the 306 snugly after pushing the 306 intake about 1/2" into it. I hope that makes sense.
