(With more than one good answer...) I wear these as my professional Santa Boots so I keep them very shiny and "pretty" looking... if you want to keep the leather healthy, almost any good leather cleaner followed by a good leather conditioner will work, my recommendations for the cleaner are either "Leather Honey" or "Leather Nova" followed up immediately with a leather conditioner from either of the same companies. There are a TON of good cleaners and conditioners out there but I tend to use one of those two brands... they are pricier than some you'd find at the tack store but well worth it if you really want to make these boots last a lifetime (and you only use a small amount per cleaning/treatment). Also... you only need to do that a couple of times a year if you are wearing them regularly... or whenever you get them really soaked through... in that case, let them dry for a week or 2 before treating them with a cleaner and conditioner. All that being said... if you want the "rough and ready"-look, you can just brush them off, clean them with some saddle soap and then rub some neatsfoot oil into them once in a blue moon, it will keep them pliable but still give you that gnarly biker look! ;-) Or... go the old-school route and break out the kiwi shoe polish kit and keep them shined up... yep, that "wax" that your dad used on his shoes is pretty darn good for keeping the water from soaking in to them, even if it doesn't really penetrate too far into the leather to keep it supple.But... no matter what you use, long term leather care comes down to this: When leather gets wet (from water or sweat), it dries hard and stiff... and is then more likely to crack... so... keep your boots clean, dry and supple and they'll last you a lifetime... especially these puppies, they are very well made. **Q: are these steel toe?** A: No, not this style. The Chippewa 27909 is the steel toe version. **Q: Where is the 17" measured from? is it from inside the boot, so the length of your calf? or from outside the boot so sole to tip?** A: Will check and respond, but I believe it is from sole at instep to top of calf. **Q: I see you don’t have a size 12. Do these boots run small? My usual sneaker size is a 10, and the 9 1/2 was shaking around on my foot, whereas the 9 fits nice lengthwise.
