Review: After four years with a 7D, the 7D2 is a really nice step up - NICE upgrade!!!! Besides several small pocket Canons like G11 and S100, I've owned a 40D, 50D, and for the last 4 years my primary body has been a 7D. Photography is part of what I do professionally AND it is a huge personal passion. Between the two, I shoot 25k-30k images a year. I tend to shoot tightly cropped, longer images, not wider, so the x1.6 crop factor over a full-frame pro body works fine for me (as does the price difference... worth a nice chunk of L-glass). The 7D2 includes my top three wish-list items over the 7D: locking mode dial, GPS, more focus points. Beyond that there are MANY other upgrades that work to my advantage, such a super-speedy continuous shooting, great high ISO IQ, excellent focusing and focus tracking options, to name a few. For an experienced photographer who wants to finesse settings to maximize a shooting style or nail a subject, this is a great body. (In that regard, the software and combo possibilities are VERY much like a 5D3.) All the remarkable features, options and combinations of options can be confusing and overwhelming, even for an experienced photog. The owner's manual (even the big one that comes as a PDF) is not always much help teaching you what the heck something is or why you'd want to set it "this way" instead of "that way." In several ways, the 7D2 is much more complicated than the 7D. Once you get your 7D2, it might behoove you to find a good, expansive guide to give real-world examples and reasons why you should consider certain settings. (I got the 400-pg Klostermann guide PDF. Good, inexpensive, it's helpful and covers all the features pretty well, but it's not quite all I was hoping for. With that said, even though I am an experienced photog who reads owner's manuals, it definitely has helped me understand some of the improved and expanded features much better.) [I won't go into a review of the remarkable features of the 7D2. Others have done that far better than I can. But I do want to put in a good word for the original Canon 7D and the importance of good lenses. The 7D is selling for way less than a grand these days. (Right now I see it at a couple very reputable camera stores for under $800!!!) If I was on a budget and had my choice between a "7D2 with non-L-glass" or a "7D with an L-lens," I'd go for the latter in a second. The lens is going to make a bigger difference in IQ (image quality) than either of those bodies. (I own several chunks of L-glass; I know.) Other advantages to the 7D: the menus/settings are easier to understand and it gets over 1500 images on a battery charge (vs maybe 800 images with 7D2). If your resources are limited, but you want to take high quality images, consider buying the best lenses possible. Also, consider that a Canon L-lens will probably retain 80%-90% of its value forever, but a body will lose 70% of its value in just a few years.] Bringing this review back to the 7D2 -- fabulous camera! Great new tool. Love it!
Review: great camera, but needs good lens to perform well. - Had it for about a week. As a father, I live at the ice rink, daughter figure skates, son plays hockey. The quality of the photos, when in focus, is truly amazing. I am still trying to workout the camera to proper settings with the AF options. I tried taking pictures with ISO200 and in between, up to ISO600, but since the ice rinks light conditions vary from one end to the other, it does not work uniformly. There is a AF Case 5 for "erratic subjects moving quickly in any direction", but I still did not get a chance to test it. It does not have the "running guy" mode dial like EOS50D. I put in Lexar Professional 1066x 64GB memory, it runs smoothly and very quick. I am going to test some RAW files this weekend. Video: I am new to DSLR video mode. When I am recording video, I can still take pictures, but there is a 1 or 2 second stall while the picture is processed. So you will notice when the picture is taken while recording. I watched the video taken using the 70-200mm IS USM II, it is wonderful, clear, crisp.. zooms in and out very smooth. I attempted to record using the generic 28-135mm IS lens that came with EOS50D, and it still came out very clear and crisp... the problem is that when I tried to manually zoom in and out, the lens feels cheap and does not rotate smoothly, it jerks alot, even goes out of focus... I truly blame it on the lens. Kills the joy of recording video when you have the shutter trying to continuously autofocus. I am in the market for a lens to complement my 70-200mm, what should I get? I want to stay in the 18 to 100 range, but need advice. Strongly appreciated.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: supera a la Canon 70D??**
A: It would depend on what you want it for. It's no question the 7D Mark II is the better of the two. Even better than the 90D in many aspects in the field. For sports/ outdoor photography, it's a quantum leap over the 70d. The 7Dmark II is only overpriced to the ones the don't shoot in professional environments of sports/outdoors. The articulating screens can break easily in rugged environments. Same goes for the touch screen in moisture rich environments. IMO touch is Pointless to those who don't need to look at the screen to change settings especially when shooting in M (manual) mode. The stutter is built for 200,000 actuations, just passed 400,050. The 7D Mk II is my APC-s (Advanced Photo System type- C ) or crop-sensor workhorse.viewfinderinder II is the best VF so far. If money is an issue, buy refurbished or used. Save a grand. The 70d is a plastic toy camera in comparison. However, if you're an amateur, novice or hobbyist that wont be picking it up and using it daily for years and years, then just go for the 70d. They both take exceptional photos.

**Q: Has anyone else had this problem? My autofocus points dont light up red like my other Canons did? Thanks**
A: Go to the AF Tab in the menu and select the fifth dot. By default VF display Illumination is set to Auto. The camera makes the decision when to light up the points. Change to 'Enable' to keep them on.

**Q: Is it worth it to upgrade from the 70D? Personally, I think not.**
A: If you already have the 70D then IMO no. I think this especially true if you do video as the 70D has a articulating touch screen which is superior to the dumbed down fixed non touch screen on the overpriced 7D mk ii.

**Q: Does it have in-camera High Dynamic Range capability?**
A: Yes it does. Pretty good actually. It can be done automatically or you can set up the amount of bracketed shots, the EV spacing between the shots, alignment of the shots and how the resulting JPEG will look. You can also keep the individual shots for later post processing if you want to.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Camera Love and the Happy Purchase
*by Z***E on June 23, 2015*

After years of use from my Canon EOS 7D, I started to look to the enhanced AF wonders of the higher-end Canon EOS 5D MK III. The 7D gave this amateur bird and micro guy a fine education, but of course one always wants more. (Though I know perfectly well, through hard experience, that pro-technique will prevail over the amateur in possession of all the bells and whistles available at hand.) But the pricey 5D MK III was simply more camera than I could justifiably afford, even to myself. So imagine my delight when I heard of the new 7D MK II. I've never felt I needed the full-frame body, but here was a camera with the enhanced AF, at a price comparable to my original 7D. Of course I purchased it as soon as I could. I should probably wait a year to review it; there's a learning curve here that I'm just beginning to climb. (The full manual, included on disk in PDF format, is more than 500 pages, nearly twice the length of the original 7D's manual) -- there is much to learn. But I'm delighted by this camera and its design. On the low-hanging fruit portion of the bells and whistles -- you can dial in a grid to sight through the view-finder,so your vertical subject is vertical and the horizon is level, not at the 15% slant I usually attain. So a happy and confident five stars from me. I'm going to have years of fun and growth from this camera. I couldn't ask for more. But I got more. . . I purchased this camera through The Photo Center, via Amazon fulfillment. A day or so after receipt I noticed the price had dropped $200. I was still very happy with the camera, the price had been stated, and I paid it happily. But on Saturday I emailed The Photo Center and told them that while I was delighted by my purchase, I wondered if there was something they might do for me on the price end of things. A couple of hours later, Brendan, at The Photo Center, contacted me saying he was sure that there was something that could be done for me, but that he'd have to work through Amazon on Monday to get it done. By dinner time on Monday, Amazon had placed $200 back on my card. It doesn't get better than that. A great camera. And fast, responsive, five-star customer service. And one delighted customer.
