You can barely hear it through a closed door. I use it to let me know if the power goes out to my freezer. **Q: Does the light flask while alarming? Go to steady on (flashlight mode) when unplugged?** A: Unplugging the unit is the same as a power outage. The light flashes and the not very loud alarm sounds when the power is out. **Q: What happens if you plug this into a 220v ac outlet (ie in africa or europe)? will it still function as intended?** A: My unit clearly says 110VAC on the back. Therefore it is likely to burn up. Sorry, I'm not going to test it on mine (I have 220V available). **Q: How long can the battery power the alarm?** A: Don't know. If the juice fails in the middle of the day, and you are AT HOME, you'll probably know it::: i.e. T.V., lights, radio etc will go off... If you ARE NOT AT HOME....? Tough!!! ... This won't alert you... . (You need then, to spend thousands of dollars for an alert system to your I-Phoney or whatever....) ... THIS ain't THAT.... If you're buying THIS to alert you of your FREEZER failing in the garage, ya might wanna get your electrical system checked. This won't make enough noise to alert you that your freezer (in the garage) has failed, (unless your garage has paper-thin-walls...). That's NOT what it's FOR...What it IS for, is to alert you with a blinking light and a fairly loud beeping alarm system that your ELECTRICITY in your HOUSE has FAILED!... Put it in your BEDROOM, plug it in, and leave it alone... If your electricity goes off, it will emit a fairly loud beeping sound (and unless you are deaf, no offense to the hearing impaired, I am, too!) it will WAKE YOU UP (is it a FIRE TRUCK? NO... but it will wake you...) also with a blinking light, alerting you to the fact that your electricity in your house has GONE OFF!!!Might save you some spoiled food (in the summer,) or frozen pipes (in the winter,) or a fire or security-system-failure (ANYTIME) because your electricity has been cut-off, for whatever-r-r-r reason....Many of the comments below expect this thing to alert you to your freezer in the barn (1/2-mile away) or that it needs to be louder, because you can't hear it above your BLARING STEREO!!!... Just be aware of it's limitations. This will not likely wake you if you are asleep, and I'm glad of that. There are power failure "Alarms" available that are loud enough to give you a heart attack if that's what you want. This little unit is just something to make you aware of a wall outlet circuit power failure.I was reluctant to buying this product after reading the reviews posted by others who claim the alarm is terribly weak. But for the inexpensive price and special free shipping offer if I spent over $xx.xx, I bought 2 of them to get the free shipping offer. I basically paid about $5 for the second one.I bought this to plug into one of my bathroom GFCI outlets to let me know if it trips because the circuit also feeds my garage freezer. I have already had to deal with thawed freezer food and wanted something to let me know within a reasonable amount of time that the power to the freezer has gone out.To all those who complained about the very low alarm volume, you all must have a serious hearing problem.
