I bought the tree anyway, and I am happy with it. Yes, the bottom part that holds the batteries does not "click in", but some duct tape fixed that, and it was on the bottom anyway and does not show up. And, yes, the lights are faint. But, they remind me of Christmas lights under a light covering of snow--the lights have the same effect, and I like it. It brings back memories of outside Christmas lights in December. Besides, the tree without the lights turned on is a nice Christmas ornament. I was pleased that the white ceramic part of the tree was smooth and glossy, and it looks very nice.
