Why does the gauge show high pressure when I am not spraying, but drops when I pull the trigger?

That is how it works. With no air moving, the gauge reads line pressure. Pull the trigger and it shows your working pressure. Adjust the knob while air is flowing; that is the number that matters for your finish.

Is this a true pressure regulator or just a flow control valve?

A flow control valve with a gauge. It adjusts the air at the gun while you spray. It does not hold a set pressure with no air flowing. If you need diaphragm-style regulation, see the AR-02 Diaphragm option on this page.

Will this fit my HVLP/LVLP spray gun?

If the gun inlet is 1/4 in, yes. Most guns screw into the chrome female port, and your hose fitting goes on the blue male end. If your gun inlet is female, thread the blue end into it. Airbrush hoses need a 1/8 in adapter. Fittings are not included.

Will paint thinner or solvents damage the gauge?

Keep thinner and gun cleaner off the gauge lens and wipe the body with a damp cloth. Do not soak the valve.
