The top ramp slides down and back up again. I does not 'hold' while in the up position unless the lower ramp or door is closed. That lower ramp, when folded up, holds the top ramp in place. The lower ramp sort of snaps into the truck. I will say, however, it isn't a very 'tight' locking mechanism but it does hold the top ramp in.
