The non-slip layer on bottom works on many different surfaces (all of the ones i tried at least) and the clips to hook up your wrist band and clip are pretty conveniently places so they aren't getting in your way while you're building. The work layer is a solid rubber material that is very smooth and and easy on your case yet durable. Yes there are cheaper options but after working on this pad I am very glad I went with this product. The only con i have is that it came rolled up (very nice packaging though) and took awhile to get it to lay flat but putting weight on the 4 corners for an extended period of time will fix that fairly quickly and easily. All-in-all its a great product and i recommend it to anyone who wants to make sure they aren't damaging their pc components in any way when working! But like the comment above, always use the motherboard box when working on the motherboard and make sure to ground yourself by touching the computer case or the power supply. You can clip the mat to the PSU and then attach the strap to your wrist. I personal like to attach my ankle to a PSU with an anti-static strap and then attach the mat to the same PSU.
