Do you have to re-sync the remote every time you want to use it and/or every time you turn the camera off/on?

Once set you don't need to re-sync but it's only available in timer mode.

will this work with the powershot sx50hs for video

No Canon PowerShot  SX50 HS have not Bluetooth, but it will work very well  whit both Powershot SX60 HS and SX70 HS they have both WiFi and Bluetooth
