I used brute force to get one side in and then use channel locks and a small socket to squeeze in the other side. Adds a little extra strength when you tighten down on bolts you use for mounting so you don't rip through the rubber. Although the description says it will accommodate up to 4.5 inches, the product itself is gigantic. I've had a lot of luck with QuickFist products in the past, (many even used outside, sitting the Las Vegas sun for years), and this appears to be another one of their well-made products. However they are just really large, (I wish I would have measured them before I returned them), but they were far too big for my use of them. 5 stars though...
