Viewed on Netflix and found it to be both disturbing and hope-filled. Based on the true health and life events of Susannah Cahalan, as shared in her book

    . As someone working in the mental health field, this movie provides insight into how diseases of the body can affect apparent mental health. Cahalan's case brought about vast changes in the medical field, leading to the proper diagnosis of the sort of auto-immune disease she suffers from - anti-NMDA receptor autoimmune encephalitis. At the time of her diagnosis, she was only the 217th case; now thousands of people have been properly diagnosed and received treatment. Sadly, it's hard to not consider how many with this disease, going undiagnosed, ended up institutionalized or living in nursing homes because doctors could not figure out what was truly wrong with them. Although the affected individual seems absent, their mind is actually there - trapped in a mal- or non-functioning body. Will add this movie (with the book) to my educational library to share with others in the field.

This is the true story of reporter Susannah Cahalan who was fortunate enough to be played by Chloë Grace Moretz. Susannah develops a rare brain disorder that doctors had a hard time diagnosing.  Most of the film is Chloe acting goofy and then laying in a hospital bed. It is a drama without much action. In spite of being slow moving, I found it still entertaining.Guide: No F-word, sex, or nudity.
