The velcro overlap on the top lets you adjust fit easily. We did not use the leash, but it looks perfectly fine if you choose to use it. The only caveat is that the two rings that you attach to your leash are bulkier than one and if you have a very small snap hook it can be difficult to attach them. You could remedy this by attaching small key rings to the existing rings if you need to get them to fit your leash.
