The handle can be positioned to provide a comfortable grip or to attain maximum leverage. The ram cap can be adjusted using the included 0.008"- and 0.015"-thick shims to adjust the ram forward and backward and to compensate for wear. The set screw adjusts the ram sideways. The smooth action gears enable fine control over ram movement with the lever, and the open base and slotted table plate provide support for solid objects as well as an outlet for arbors and shafts to pass through. The plate can be removed or rotated to one of its 5 openings of varying diameters depending on the requirements of the application. Do they cost a lot less? Sure, and you get what you pay for. I congratulated my son's unborn son on being the new future owner of this thing. I think they are priced so high because they last forever and need very little in the form of maintenance or parts. As Dale said in one of their videos, they have been making these for over a 100 years and still don’t know what the half life is on them. That said, because these are simple machines, it was hard to not spend less money on a bigger press that was made over seas. There truly isn’t much to screw up on these things. So I have no doubt I bought quality, and I accept a premium for American made (and made well), the price is still hard to justify. In the end I do not suffer buyers remorse.
