## Description

The Barbados cherry is a large, densely branched shrub. If pruned it will form a central trunk and can grow as a small tree. It varies in shape from a low and spreading habit to a more upright and open habit with slender branches. Shiny light to deep evergreen leaves will vary in size from 1 to 3 inches and are rounded in shape. The small, attractive flowers range in color from pale pink to rose. They usually start to appear in April in our area and flowering will continue throughout the summer and sometimes into the fall. Soft, juicy, thin-skinned Barbados Cherry fruit are light red to deep crimson when mature. The outer shape somewhat resembles a small apple, but inside the fruit are several very un-apple like seed. The fully mature fruit average about an inch in diameter. Barbados cherries are borne in leaf axils, singly or in clusters of 2 or 3. The shrub may have 3 to 5 crops per year, from May to November, with the largest crops appearing during the summer. In frost-free areas it is almost everbearing. The fruit is rather tart but some selections are sub-acid to almost sweet. Inside, the flesh is yellow-orange and very high in vitamin C (ascorbic acid). The Vitamin C content of one fruit ranges from 1000 to 2000 mg per 100 grams of edible fully ripe fruit. More acid fruit has higher vitamin C content, and the amount of this compound is much higher in partially ripe fruit. Sometimes a single Barbados Cherry fruit can supply the daily adult requirement of vitamin C.

Review: My four perfect Barbados Cherry Trees (and pictures) - I recently received 4 tiny, very cute, Barbados Cherry Trees, by mail. They all arrived in perfect condition, and was carefully wrapped, and watered too. I kept them for about 4 days in my kitchen window sill, so they'd get light. Yesterday, I planted 3 of the 4 trees, inside three 3-gallon containers. I kept the 4th tree in my kitchen window sill, as reserve, but plan to plant it also, possibly inside a hugh 25 gallon or more container. I plan to plant at least 2 in either front yard or back yard, along with my other tropical fruit trees. I want to also have a hugh container tree, as mentioned earlier in this comment. The leaves were all in tact, and the color was very good, green, no yellow. I had no leaves dropping either. I have a couple of pictures to show how cute they are, and the perfect condition after they arrived in the postal. The pictures in my house were taken the next day after arrival, and the 3 gallon containers pictures were taken yesterday after planting them in the containers. Enjoy the pictures! S. Florida location. UPDATE pictures taken of three Barbado trees (fourth is in front yard container) taken on July 29, 2018..It has only been two months since last picture when they were much smaller...please see upgraded pictures below (beginning fourth picture forward..there will be three of them)...originally I purchased four of them on May 19, 2018, and upon postal arrival were only about three to four inches high, now they are about twenty inches high. I will begin transplanting them from their one gallon containers when they are about three feet high.
Review: Plants are small but healthy - Got my cherry trees on June 21 and promptly planted them in pots. Water every other day (it’s HOT here in Houston). On July 7 just checked on them and they have pretty little buds on them. I’ll probably remove these buds to encourage root growth, but this still makes me happy.

## Features

- The price includes Four "Barbados Cherry Trees". These are 2 inch rooted starter plants shipped in 2 inch tray pots and are 2-6 inches tall.
- Tangy Tasty Cherry Great for Growing in Warmer Climates
- See More Information Below Under Product Description
- I recommend growing all your starters in a 4 inch container with a good organic potting soil like Fox Farm Happy Frog where the fertilizer and beneficials are already mixed in.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Are these self pollinating?**
A: I"ve only had one cherry trees for about three years ..it blossomed well and gave fruit.

**Q: If planted next to a cherry tree will it help pollinate the cherry tree?**
A: No, it will not. They are of different genera and incompatible pollinators of each other. There are many cherry varieties that are possible pollinators for standard varieties of cherries, but for the most effective pollination it would be helpful to know the specific variety you have already. Information as to the best one to help in pollination should be available through your county extension service (Agrilife). Many cherry varieties are self fruitful and don't require another tree, although more than one can increase your odds. If you are considering a Barbados cherry I am supposing you live in a fairly warm climate. If you are having difficulty in fruiting your existing tree, I would suspect that it may not be receiving the optimal number of chill hours (hours of winter temperatures below 45 degrees F). While there are several new varieties of cherries that need much less chill hours than traditional cherries, there does not exist a long track record and individual micro-climates could be an issue. You might look into Minnie Royal, Royal Lee, perhaps Lapin, or even Stella or Montmorency. There is a reason that commercial cherry orchards are not a feature of the Deep South. The Barbados cherry or Acerola is cherry -like, not at all what one would expect in a traditional pie, but where it can be grown, this time limitted by cold, it has its own charm and is a famous source of Vitamin C. If your climate permits growing them, they are quite attractive in the landscape. You might also consider other tropical cherry appearing fruit: jaboticaba, Surinam cherry, Cherry of the Rio Grande, and other eugenia. A bit north of this range maybe some of the cherry/plum hybrids or bush cherries such as Nanking. Make your first call to your county extension office or seek out local Master Gardeners who can steer you in the best direction. Best of luck to you

**Q: Can it grow in zone 7**
A: I dont play the answer a question about a zone game. Zones kill more plants. So barbados cherries will loose their new growth in the low 40s it is tender. Beyond that, they are good down to a light frost...32-33 with no damage. Below that, the plants, if mulched will come back from a light freeze but not a hard freeze. They grow well in pots amd can be brought in for the coldest nights.

I hope i gave you the info you want..darren

**Q: What zone is good for this type of cherry tree?**
A: We are in zone 9 but further south is recommended as it is tropical
