It is recommend to replace every 5 years at least or when it is stained complete through. It is great for catching the sediment in the water. **Q: What is the diameter of the sponge?** A: About 4 and 1/8th inches wet. I would gusee that it is similar dry, out of the box, but don't know for sure. **Q: Why are these considerably more expensive than directly through the Nikken page? Am i missing something?** A: Selling on Amazon is not free. As a seller, there are required fees that must be paid.
