It's two clamps and a piece of flat metal, of course it's gonna be unstable on a soft-topped table. Just get a cheap hard wood or metal table to attach the pulley. I have it on my wood desk. For the one person who said the clamps are bad... I've had no issues. If you set it up normally on a flat, hard surface, it does not budge. I've put almost 100lbs on the other end and been just fine.
