It definitely softens water. Usually by this point I would have to remove calcified deposits from the shower head but this has effectively removed them. I would imagine that it's effective up to the traditional filtering range for most of these multi media filters that use layered media. I'm happy enough with not having to deal with cleaning my shower heads anymore so I think this was a decent buy.
