My mother has a set of Pimpernel cork placements from forty years ago that still look like they are brand new. The ones I bought a couple of years ago were ready for the rubbish pile in short order. The design, while absolutely gorgeous, is printed on very thin paper which is adhered to the cork base. Any bit of moisture left too long causes damage. In my opinion, you should be able to put a glass down and not have to worry about the condensation or little spills that naturally occur ruining your placemats!
