It has the smoothness of plastic and the softness and flexibility of rubber. The hat was not crushed up when I opened the package. This is a HIGH crown hat, so you'll have extra room in the front of the hat as other reviews have mentioned the hat being "deep" or for "larger headed" individuals. I was not used to it but I'm not complaining. I personally like it being "large" so it doesn't feel like it's going to fly off of my head in comparison to mid/low crown hats. This hat style may be deep, but it's a nice deep "snug hug" feeling to me. I use the extra space as an advantage to wear it at certain angles, like if I want the bill lower (to block the sun in my eyes) or higher (for a larger field of view).
