Having multiple snares to compare against, I am going to give a detailed review. Tuning... This Evans Onyx is durable. It's on a 5×14 PDP Concept Maple snare. I have it pretty high pitched, about a half step lower than my 6.5x13" Pork Pie snare with Ambassador heads. It stretched evenly and has a darker sound. It's very controlled. There are few overtones. I do not have a moon gel on it. It's use is great for heavy stuff or if your looking for a dark, focused yet controlled attack. It would not use it for a jazz gig or a concert gig. The The response from the head is not even close to what an Ambassasdor or Evans G1 or G2 head would be. Doubles need to be stroked out more to get a clean, responsive sound. Review: Great tone for all tunings - Got this head to put on my 14x14 Gretsch floor tom and it’s great! I tune it low for a fatter controlled sound on fusion dates, but you can really crank it for bop tuning without sounding like you’re choking the drum.
