lavish!
This is supposedly a 'smaller' and 'cheaper' edition than the first edition of the full on Taschen release. All I can say is the proper edition must be the size of a wall, because THIS edition is HUUUGE! And the print and paper quality throughout is stunning. The extra material (art pages, text introduction, bios) are well worth the extra. Best of all however are the stories themselves - real works of pop art that still pack a thrill to this day. It is SO GOOD seeing Ditko's art in such great quality!

First Spider-Man book.
I wanted a book that would be a great present for my Grand Son as he was a keen Spider-Man follower. This book maybe worth good money in the future.

So good...
This book is fantastic! Great quality and a more manageable size the the XXL versions from Taschen!! I also bought the Avengers one off the back of just how nice this is...hope Taschen do more of this size, I'd definitely get them!

The silver age was a golden age
I have no interest in the convoluted tangle of interconnected Marvel comics of today, but the past was,and thanks to reprints,is a glorious thing. Past DC,EC,and Marvel are as good now as ever they were in my boyhood days, classics of the silver age still retain their interest. This is no exception, and enjoyable on many levels, art, creativity, and nostalgia. My original issues are long vanished, but with volumes such as this, among others,it's easy to revisit the past.

Love this book!
A great replication of those classic silver age comics. Be warned that this one is more Omnibus sized rather than the huge version. Probably easier to store but was hoping it was the bigger one (serves me right for not checking the dimensions). Worth it though, better size and cheaper! Looks like it's just this one and the first Avengers one so far but if they do more I'll definitely be picking them up! Includes all the ads, some extra context material about Amazing Fantasy.

I have the original XXL version of this book by Taschen. However, due to its humongous size, it was not a comfortable read, so I bought this smaller-sized version as well. The contents are the same in both versions, this smaller one being slightly larger than the average Marvel and DC omnibus collections (more like a European-sized album). But, there are some differences between both versions. The cover has the main figures embosed and so is the title on the spine (which wasn't the case with the much larger XXL version). However, unlike the larger version, it's all printed on the same glossy paper (the XXL version using matt paper for the inside of the comics, but glossy paper for the covers). Maybe it was the use of glossy paper that makes the colors appear lighter in this version, I don't know. I also noticed some of the images seem blurry, probably due to the reduction of size from the previous version (if the comics were photographed and not scanned, as Taschen claims, reducing photos makes them blurry). This is noticeable in the lettering, which appears thinner here than in the XXL version, and some panels appear blurry in some stories. Although Taschen made some corrections from the old comics, the only correction I can see is the one of eliminating the tanning of the paper (but in doing so, there is less density with the colors, as they appear lighter). This is, however, better than the Folio version, which simply scanned the old comics, tanning and all, and printed them on glossy paper: the paper from the old comics having turned brown, makes the colors not only look muddy, but sometimes it's impossible to read the word balloons from how smudgy the black ink appears. This isn't the case with the Taschen books that look much better, yet keeps that "old" comics appearance with bad printing and coloring. If that's what you are looking for, this is a cheaper (and more readable) version from the XXL one. That said, the book is still heavy. Anyway, if you want a version with better color printing and sharper images, stick to the Marvel omnibus or epic collections, but if you want a more vintage look, this might be a better option, although the printing doesn't appear as sharp as in the XXL version. Which is why I removed a star for this version. --Update--- Although I mentioned that there was hardly any restoration done, actually, on a closer inspection there is tons. They've fixed the color alignment problems during its original printing and removed the colors and inks that seep from the pages. In all, it's quite an extraordinary feat, on a par with the Fantagraphic books collecting the Atlas era comics. However, the colors are lighter than in the XXL version. I don't know why, if they are using the same files. I give it a four and half stars, but you can't show it here.
