It's a pad but it easily covers my entire back (though I'm a short girl). My lower back aches from bad posture, so the cord length gives me the choice to use it either in bed or in a chair/couch. The 2 hour is also very convenient if you want to go to sleep with it on. I like how easily I can change the different temperature levels, and it is a comforting heat that helps loosen muscles.
