Because, not everything is on the Internet. For example, dental claims still have to be faxed to the payor. This USB FAX dongle was literally plug and play on the hardware side. It integrated very nicely into the Windows 10 environment. No additional drivers to download or add. You can choose to purchase some fancy FAX software for your computer. If you do, it will probably be easier to use than the free software that is part of Windows 10 and included more functionality. But since it is already there, and my needs are simple, I just decided to deal with the rough edges of the free software, instead. I ended up having to fiddle a little with the software. It is not as intuitive as I would have liked, but free lowers my expectations. It transmitted the documents. So I really can’t complain. I was able to transmit some retirement paperwork, to the Army, that would have otherwise required a trip to a retail business center, like Staples, Office Max, etc. to get it done. The only improvement that I would suggest is some transmission status indicator. Either an audio acknowledgment of a successful connection (the old whistle tones), or the addition of one LED. With an LED, it could turn on solid when it goes off hook (receiving dial tone), blink slowly while dialing and waiting to connect; then blink rapidly once data is being exchanged; and then turns off once it goes back on hook (it hangs up). One of these two changes would be a big help for situational awareness. But there is no speaker on the modem. So any sounds would have to come from the laptop speaker, and that is really a function of the Windows software and not the modem. The LED idea is something that the vendor could add to the FAX dongle itself. Otherwise, if you watch the software, it does display updates during the connection process and displays additional messages along the bottom of the transmitting window, on the PC’s software. Bottom line: Nice price. Good performance. Most importantly, it gets the job done. I can comfortably recommend this to others. If needed, I would definitely buy this again. Connect a phone line to it, then plug it into a USB port (nothing happens), then find and open Windows Fax and Scan (Windows 10 Home) and follow the wizard to set up. Then you can create a new fax within Windows Fax and Scan, or you can open a document, Ctrl-P to print, and choose Fax as the printer. Windows Fax and Scan opens and lets you enter a phone number and send. It can be set to answer and receive faxes automatically, too. When my multifunction printer, which included fax, died, the replacement did not have the fax function. For my occasional use, this simple device, working with the included Windows 10 app, is just fine.
