In the pictures I thought the black dots may have been some kind of rubber for grip. I wasn't too keen of the thought of potentially having little pieces of rubber glued to the knife. I ordered this set anyway and was pleasantly surprised that the dots are just colored dimples like a golf ball. Utility knife grip: Looking at the picture of the utility knife I was worried about the grip because the handle looks a little different. I immediately washed this knife upon receiving it and used it to chop up some veggies. I found it very comfortable to use. No concerns with the grip at all. My set was out of the box sharp and I was chopping things up effortlessly. I have serveral of them and they are great. No dishwasher and you need to sharpen them. They were recommended to me by Anthony Bourdan. These are very high quality chef's knives at a very good price. You take care of them and they will take care of you. **Q: Do global knives come with sheaths or can sheaths to fit be purchased?** A: Mine did not come with blade protectors. I own a few other global knives and decided to expand to make all of my "daily driver" knives Globals. They are very sharp out of the box. The handles are very comfortable, and they are a good value in this three pack. The main advantage of a global knife to me versus a lot of the other german knives is the fact that they don't require daily maintenance. Global sells some steels but even openly acknowledges that this really isn't required maintenance. And they do go a LONG time between sharpenings. The monolith nature of the knife also reduces the amount of sharp crevices where debris can build; they are easy to wash and stay clean. Possible downsides depending on your use include the fact that the chefs knife is not particularly heavy; if you need a lot of weight with a knife then you might want to consider either a forged global or another heavier knife. Also, while the handles are comfortable for me, I'm not 100% that they would be comfortable for hours on end cutting, particularly if you have large hands.
