For certain types of pieces, whether flat or curved, this is a great way to achieve a satin finish or a glossy one without using glazes, as you can avoid drips or other unevenness that sometimes occur with glazes, especially those that you brush on that may leave brush marks. I used the set, in the proper progression, to polish a lentil-shaped bead (a curved piece) I had baked using two colors of clay with two different sheens — one, a sparkly bronze, and the other a matte purple. (I started by sanding the piece first with a 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper, even though the instructions say that the 1500 grit is similar to a conventional 400 grit, just to be safe.). As you can see from the photos, the polishing made quite a difference in the shine on both colors. It’s probably more noticeable on the purple, since it was matte. In the photos below, the bead on the left was polished with the Micro Mesh series. The bead on the right was not; that is how it looked after baking and cooling. Thinned lemon oil or Danish oil can be applied as a finish on bare wood. - MicroMesh performs very well in conjunction with polyurethane, polyester, epoxy, lacquer and so on. Follow the manufacturer’s recommended cure times prior to re-coating or applying the finish coat. When you are applying multiple coats, sand from 1500 Micro-Mesh to 3200 or 3600 between coats to remove any orange-peel or dirt. After the final coat has fully cured, polish the surface beginning with 2400 Micro-Mesh and continue through the series (3200-12000) until the desired gloss is achieved. - Satin finishes are achieved by sanding up to the 3600 grade. The satin finish gets progressively higher in gloss through the 6000 step. High gloss finishes will appear by the 6000 through 12000 step. Aluminum oxide and silicon carbide abrasives won't work as well on "super steels" (e.g. CPM S30V, which contain vanadium carbides, pretty hard stuff that really only cuts quickly on diamond or cubic boron nitride) but unless you're going for a mirror polish anything harder than steel will work just fine.The soft backing on micro mesh is great for some applications, and it could give you an interesting 'convex' shape (like using a buffing wheel or belt grinder) if you really work on your technique, but I think you'll find that something like 3M (or other brand) lapping 'films' work much better for maintaining a consistent angle. Sandpaper can work in a pinch, but it loads too much to use dry and it's pretty messy when wet, I'd recommend the "film" sheets over paper if you're serious about starting a real sharpening routine. **Q: Can these be used on plastic to bring it back to clear?** A: Yes. The range of grits in the set are ideal for finishing once you are done with the more coarse sanding. After working up to 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper, the Micro Mesh 1500 (which is supposedly approximately equal to 400 grit sandpaper) is a perfect starting point to continue on with finer sanding and polishing. Some of the reviews mentioned the cost was a bit high for the small pads, but I think they are worth the price for my project (building an unfinished kit guitar), especially considering they are very easy to clean, and will likely last until my project is done, and then some. Aside from sanding the guitar body between coats of Tru Oil, the finer grits of Micro Mesh are amazing for polishing the neck, fingerboard, and frets.
